The fan will contain either a male or female Molex connector, and sometimes both. If your fan has both types of connectors, you need only connect one of the two to the power supply. Plug the connector into the opposite power supply connector (e.g. male to female or female to male) and turn the power on.

Can 3 pin Molex connect to 4 pin?

Please Note: You can connect a 3 Pin Fan to a 3 Pin or 4 Pin header on the motherboard. The fan will function normally no matter type of fan header is used. The fan connector will have two guides (1) and these will need to line up with the tab (2) that is on the motherboard fan header.

Are Molex fans safe?

It’s “safe” in as much as two fans which typically draw a fraction of an amp, won’t come close to overloading the wiring or the PSU. With proper wiring you could safely run many more than two fans off one PSU Molex connector.

How many fans can you connect to a Molex?

A molex connector can handle around 5 amps of current at 12 volts for a total of 60W of power. I personally wouldn’t try to connect 30 fans to a single 4-pin molex, but you will probably not have any issues overloading a circuit with fans.

Can I plug a 3 pin fan into a 4-pin?

1 Answer. Apparently a 3-pin fan can plug directly into a 4-pin socket. Two of the pins provide power to the fan, the 3rd provides an RPM pulse to the motherboard to read the speed. The 4th pin is for PWM speed control.

Can I put a 3 pin fan in a 4 pin slot?

Distinguished. The 4th pin allows PWM controlled speed, 3 pins will plug into 4 pin sockets but control signal won’t be sent and fans will run at max. 3 pin fans don’t have PWM controlled speed. So it’s fine.

Can 3 pin fans be PWM?

Pulse width modulation (PWM) fans are DC fans with an extra wire for PWM. PWM fans are 4-pin fans where the fourth wire sends a PWM signal to the fan motor. The PWM signal is the control input of the PWM fan….PWM Fans or 4-Pin Fans.

Is Molex to 3 Pin Safe?

Do NOT plug in BOTH the 3-pin connector and the Molex connector on any fan! Doing that will force power backwards into your mob fan headers. Do ONE of them only and leave the other connector unused.

Can I cut Molex off fan?

No. The fan is wired so that it can take power either from the 3/4-pin motherboard header, or from the 4 pin molex. Thus the power from the 3/4-pin and molex are running parallel to one another. If you snip that wire and it shorts, you are essentially shorting the same power terminals leading to your motherboard.

How many fans can I connect to a PSU?

Many fans bring an adapter (or you can buy one) to convert from the three-pin connector most fans come with to a molex connector you can plug to one of themolex connectors of your pc’s power supply. With this one you can connect up to four fans.

Are 140mm fans better than 120mm?

It has always occurred to me that, if you can, you should always just put 140mm fans in that spot, because they are larger and can therefore spin slower to achieve the same cooling as a 120mm but more quietly, but could also spin faster for even more cooling.
